Asher McRae has cycled across India, most notably from Kanyakumari to Gangotri. In a recent trip he cycled from Dehradun to Khardungla, which this article is about. At a personal level he is unbelievably humble, focused, motivated and very inspiring. DYC presents this article with much hope that it will inspire many. Enjoy !

“Why don’t you take the bus?” Questions Manoj with a puzzled look on his face, eying my bicycle loaded with more than 80 pounds worth of gear. A fair question. A question that in truth I have been asking myself many, many times ever since I left Dehradun, pedaling slowly, kilometer after kilometer towards Khardungla, my destination, hundreds of kilometers away.

Why don’t I take the bus? Why choose to cycle, why endure the dust and the choking fumes that heavily loaded trucks spew into your lungs. Why put your body through such abuse, for long hours every day, straining against the wind, the road and gravity itself.

Fighting through all that nature and humanity decide to throw against you, the heat of the plains, the freezing temperatures in the mountains, the heavy monsoon rains and the reduced air pressure and lack of oxygen at high altitudes, risking heatstroke, hypothermia, AMS and the usual bacterial and viral delights.

Throw in a few hopped up taxi drivers and the frequent truck driver almost asleep at the wheel to complete the experience. And yes, do it alone.

Why, would you do such a thing? Why don’t you take the bus, it’s the same road, the same scenery but you’ll do it in a fraction of the time and won’t have to endure this long list of afflictions.

Why risk so much? Why not be safe, why not be comfortable?

Manoj awaits an answer.

I mumble something about it being much more enjoyable on a bicycle and ask him where he is headed in his truck loaded up with ACC cement bags, happy to change the subject. I’ve realized the real answer to his question is far more complex and convoluted than can be explained over chai.

What is it in us that causes us to attempt such seemingly foolish endeavors? I suppose in truth, the reasons behind doing such things are as many as the people that do them, and I can really only answer for myself.

It is a hard thing to explain. Maybe to truly understand, it has to be you that is in the saddle, sweating and heaving up one of the countless Himalayan slopes.

For me, I think it is for two reasons, firstly to remind myself of the reality of my humanity, and secondly, to stand in awe of the Creator.

It brings me back to the foundations of what it means to be human, to be a created being in the midst of God’s creation. Gone are the ceiling fans, the mosquito coils, the house to protect you against the rain and the cold, gone are the things you can control, your cell phone and your computer. I have stepped from my carefully constructed, safe world into the unknown, at the mercy of the weather and terrain and of the unknown stranger.

It reminds me of how human, and of how fragile I am, how much I rely on simple things like my tent and my sleeping bag to keep me alive and warm at night. It reminds me of how precious that magical fresh water spring is in the middle of a salt basin. Of how good even a packet of Maggie tastes after a long and hard day of climbing. Of how beautiful it is to receive a stranger’s kindness.

It simplifies, narrows, focuses life down into its essentials. I need one liter of water for breakfast and coffee, 6 to 7 liters of water for a day of riding and another liter of water for dinner. I need breakfast and dinner and some edibles to munch on while I ride. Apart from that I need to keep as cool as possible when I’m riding in the sun and stay warm and dry when I’m out of the saddle. These are the essentials, the simple rules of survival, if I can hold them true then I’ll be alright.

It may sound strange but it is good, in a humbling sort of way, to feel the dull thud in the back of my head of oncoming heatstroke, to feel the fatigue in my legs and chest, to feel my lungs struggling for oxygen. To muster all the will in me and subdue my mind into the single focus of pedaling, when my entire body and being is screaming for me to stop.

It is here, that the fullness of my humanity dawns again. To feel the desperate need for water, shade, rest, food and the many other things we tend to forget when we are comfortable. I am not invincible, as it is so easy to believe in my modern, self constructed world of home appliances and cyberspace.

My body is at its limits and my human limitations, both physical and mental, are fully in view. Though I push and stretch them, they are finite and I am a thin line away from breaching them. It is here that I can once again know and embrace the fullness of my humanity, the fullness of what it means to be created.

In this place I can stand in awe of the Creator, an extremely artistic and lavish one at that. Riding amongst the stark beauty of high altitude Himalayan desert it is something you cannot but reflect on. Gliding through mammoth shafts of rock of shade and hue stretching skyward, watching heaving glacial rivers charge with abandon towards the plains.

Fearing what the majestic and terrifying piles of clouds could bring, so soft and friendly one moment and so dark and menacing the other. Enjoying the flamboyance and colors of sunset, followed by the solemn celestial procession of stars, so incredibly dense and bright at high altitude. Following shooting stars, like flaming torches trying to write messages in the sky.

Watching the moonrise, bright as day once your eyes become accustomed, lighting up the towering snow capped peaks above you. All of this, cannot but leave me in awe of the Creator.

Journeys like these also remind me that life is much the same. No matter how well prepared I am and how many maps I’ve looked at, the path will always be new and unknown.

There are mountains to climb, rivers to cross, places to see and people to befriend …. and the places, the mountains, the rivers, the people seem so much more striking and precious when it has cost you so much sweat and struggle to reach them.

This, essentially, is why I don’t take the bus.

World is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.

– St Augustine

[ Pictures at the end of the article ]

[Approx Route Map in sidebar]

Since a long time I had cherished a dream to see my beautiful nation and now that I am being able to earn I make it a point to see some part of it every year. Long time back I made a trip to south India by road. Last year I went to Gangotri, Gaumukh and Tapovan on my bicycle and this year inspired by the last year’s experience I decided to make a trip to Leh again on my bicycle. The purpose of the journey was to explore the place, make relationships with different people, strengthen the will power and to be with the nature.

The journey started with a tough challenge “ 18 hours drive on a local bus from Dehradun to Manali” as it were, nature started preparing me to face a tough challenge which lay ahead.

My arrival at Manali at 12oclock in the night time was not a great thing to happen but still I managed to find a guest house at Nagar ( 20 kms away from Manali ) at a reasonable price and I got a very warm homely welcome at the blue guest house. The couple who owned the guest house were waiting for me as I had informed them beforehand about my arrival and not only that they were ready with dinner!

I was served a delicious and nutritious meal of Rajasthani meat and chapattis. I spent two days at Nagar to remove the tiredness of the bus journey and to acclimatize my body and mind. Thereafter started the most fascinating journey of my life paradoxically filled with thoughts of doubts and self belief .On one side I was thinking whether I will be able to achieve my goal or not and on the other side I was saying to my self that all that I need to do is to believe in my self and keep repeating in my mind the mantra of yes I can, yes I can and I must remember that I have a great power protecting me all the time. I had already realized that God is going to help me under all circumstances and this was made very clear to me by the manner in which I was received at Nagar.

I also had a cycling companion at the inception of my journey. A 57 year old man from Israel. I had a great beginning and succeeded in pedaling continuously for first 22kms, in the meantime I received a call from one of my cycling companion Col Y. Jadon, that really boosted my moral and belief. After doing about 22 kms I looked down towards the valley and ah!

What a feeling it was to look down and then read a sign board “ You are at 10,000 feet” but at this time my cycling companion was nowhere in my sight. I chose to keep moving on. What to say about the place my mind was filled with beautiful adjectives and expressions —–aha!, Wow!, Beauuutiful!, amazing!, …….. at the same time whenever I saw some difficult climbs I was somehow filled with energy and enthusiasm, it was a hard work to go uphill but at the same time it had it’s own fun and thrill.

After 37 kms of the difficult climb comes a small place Marhi which has some dhabas and a place to stay. After having a cup of tea here I chose to move to Rohtang. About 7 kms before Rohtang pass the road is worse than terrible specially for a cyclist, and on top of that you have water melting from glaciers and a huge traffic jam of about 5kms where there are thousands of vehicles.

I did not have a support car behind me as in the case of other cyclists but I had something better – a JCB mover which dropped me at Rohtang where I got a hero’s welcome from some of the tourists, some of them just could not believe that I am attempting to go to Leh on my bicycle. The route ahead of Rohtang pass ( which is at around 13,000 feet ) is very difficult. It is like riding your bike on a brook sometimes the bike was getting stuck and I had to put my feet down in the cold water but at the same time beauty of this place is beyond description the traffic density is very less and I must say that never in my life I had seen anything as beautiful as that.

Those lovely snowcapped mountains, marvelous glaciers a beautiful river flowing in the valley with sun rays shimmering on it. Alas! I could not take too many photographs of this place as I was a bit cautious about the fact that two cyclists from New Zealand had died due to avalanche just a week before my arrival. It took me 3 hours to cover 20 kms on a downhill due to the very bad condition of the road.

After crossing Rohtang pass I stayed at a small village Khoksar thereafter I went to beautiful hill station Keylong which is the capital of Lahaul Spiti province of Himachal Pradesh. Ride till Keylong ( 55kms from Khoksar) was a tough one as most part of the road was broken and the climbs were steep and insensitive drivers added more spice to the flavour by splashing water and blowing mud and diesel smoke on me, how then I remembered words of a great saint “ I asked God for strength and he gave me difficult situations to face ”.

At the same time hard work did not go unacknowledged and I met some good people…… someone gave me a nice warm scarf and suggested me to use it to prevent sun burn, then interestingly I also met a guy by the name of Lobzang who owns a firefox showroom in Kullu. I desperately wanted to get my bike fixed up and finding such a nice professional in a place like Keylong where people hardly ride bicycles was nothing less than a miracle.

The route has five passes Rohtang, Baralacha, Nakeela, Lachalung and Tanglangla, after crossing Baralacha pass( which is at 16000 ft) the next 200kms are above 14000ft. Well I can just go on and on and on in describing the beauty of this place but at the same time I have realized that I have written too much. The most beautiful pass was Baralacha where one can feel the thin air and sharp sun and the next 200 kms were having similar conditions. After crossing this pass one enters a different world altogether a beautiful paved road, nice downhill and splendid beauty. For sometime I could not believe that I was in this place all alone with no body around and that too on my bicycle ah! All this was similar to a fairy tale coming true, the beauty was more than what I expected, and sight of Himalayan Marimots and eagles added more spice to the flavor.

It will not be true to say that everything was easy and beautiful. The route is really challenging and difficult and I did come across some difficult people on the way but majority of them were kind and helpful. Entering Ladakh after completing my journey was a great achievement and prior to that I made a visit to the most famous and the most ancient Hemis Monastery of Leh where I met a Swiss cyclist who has traveled a lot in India and it was for the first time in his life that he came across an Indian cyclist, his name was Christoph and we met each other as if we have been great friend since ages. He gave me some very useful information and guided me to a very lovely guest house at Changspa in Leh.

In the end I will only like to say that the hard work done and the journey I undertook bought me more close to the bigger power, I felt him when I saw those lovely beautiful mountains, amazing landscapes, and more than that when I came across difficulties for whenever I felt anxious helped arrived for me from almost nowhere and these difficulties strengthened me and me realize that there is so much within me waiting to be unfolded ( the gifts given to me by him)……The land of Buddha will remain in my heart forever.

P.S:

Ladakhis are lovely people and they live in very difficult circumstances, their livelihood depends mainly on tourism ( from mid of July till mid October) and recent natural disaster must have added so much to their problems. I would request the reader to do something for them………at least we can pray for their well being. May the spirit of the great Buddha give them the strength to overcome all their adversities with an equanimous mind.

Light up the mind !

Yesterday, we had a small get together and the general thought drifted towards “What is satisfaction and what is happiness?”

Now, that is really absurd because these are very individual specific and is difficult to generalise. But to my thinking mind (I do have some of it and use it sometimes!), certain things stuck out adequately to grab attention. There were divergent views as to how to reach that state that of happiness and satisfaction. The views on what is it were also similar but much less divergent. Some associated it with name, others with fame, yet others with money. Some thought that if you are satisfied you will stop progressing, some thought that satisfaction an happiness are the first steps towards giving up.

Some felt that these are attained only at the end of it all. Hardly a person thought about the co-relation that exists between the material progress and happiness. Well, to say the least material progress and happiness does have a co-relation. These are not mutually exclusive. As some would say “Teach a child something about possessing before you can teach him (or her) the value of sharing” Possessing and sharing are not exclusive as is sometimes perceived by a lot of people.

These do have some co-relation, probably to the same degree as happiness and material progress, at least I believe so. This would be better understood if you observed the society a little closely. All rich people or all poor people are not happy. Similarly, all poor people or all rich are also not unhappy. Thus arises the question – if material progress does not give you happiness the what does? Well, all people are as different as their faces, so what will give them happiness is also as different.

Some people who are in business will be happy if their business flourishes.Similarly, sports persons derive happiness in the glory they seek, doctors in the way they help others and so on and so forth. But this we are talking in the zone of co-relation. Beyond, that the things that will bring happiness is a universal constant i.e. “the goodness in you” factor. It is this “the goodness in you” factor, that I feel will bring happiness. If you have harmed people to do well in your business, you will be happy as long as you exist in the co-relation zone. Beyond that you will again be unhappy. That understanding I think is what makes people happy and satisfied.

Too much thinking for the day.

Time to get back on the saddle and go for a good ride.

Some of us at DYC may not know Mohit. Here’s the deal. The guy is 18 yrs old, finishing school, soft spoken and one awesome rider !

Recently he was in the news for the right reasons to do us all proud. Here one of the articles featuring him. And yes, he’s a DYC Bikers’ Club member ! Don’t believe me. Just google “mohit ubhan” and see what’s the first thing you get ???

This article is from the “The Tribune”. Original article can be found here

Cycling 700 km in the hills is undoubtedly a challenging task, but 18-year-old Mohit Ubhan finished the task in just 10 days.

The young cyclist from Dehradun won the Best Emerging Riders Award at the International Mountain Terrain Biking (MTB) Himachal Competition held recently.

He prepared for the competition in just two months. He was the youngest cyclist at the competition that saw the participation of 64 cyclists that included Army men, Australians, Americans and Belgians.

Mohit has been cycling for the past five years in Dehradun. His passion for cycling could be judged from that fact that he has cycled through the uphill-48-km stretch from Dehradun to Mussoorie 23 times in record time of one hour and 55 minutes.

But it is not as easy as it looks. Mohit’s first attempt to cycle to Mussoorie took him four hours. But thereafter, he has been constantly working on his stamina to make the difficult task look easy.

Mohit said, “I never thought of cycling for 700 km and neither did I know about this competition. My friend Siddharth persuaded me into participate in the meet.”

He admitted that the competition was one of the most difficult task that he has ever done in his life.

The very first stage was an eye opener for him. “The first stage was a 30-km rocky downhill stretch and many cyclists met with serious accidents that forced them to quit the race in the beginning. Balancing my cycle and riding safely was my main concern.”

He did well and came second at this stage. His good run continued in the second stage where he secured the first spot.

Although he could not hold on to the positions for long and ended at the fifth spot in the competition, his valiant effort earned him the Best Emerging Riders Award.

Now, Mohit has his eyes set on next year’s MTB Himachal meet and aims to win the competition.

But his dream of cycling does not end here. He wishes to participate at the world’s most popular cycling competition Tour de France that covers a distance of 4,000 km and witnesses the participation of cyclists from around the world.

Mohit is presently doing his Class XII studies from the open board and is also working in an imported cycle shop where he keep dreaming about cycles and races.

P.S. You may show your appreciation for Mohit by commenting on this post

Today afternoon i decided to do go to the mid way of Mussorie on my bicycle. I was a little hesitant initially but somehow i pushed myself and left home. It was hot but i didn’t feel the heat until i covered around 10 kms. I was drenched with sweat and was thinking what is the use of all this? At the same time an idea flashed in my mind that all great things are difficult and you have to go against the flow of world to do something worthwhile. Evil things tend to pull us down but a hero moves towards the good fighting all odds. Nevertheless it is a herculean task to overcome evil tendencies of mind. Now i got a reason to pedal on.

After covering 15 kms i came across a very steep road which is 3 kms long and if u come downhill on this road you can easily acquire the speed of around 80 km/hr on your vehicle without using the engine. After covering 1 km i thought it is not my piece of cake i should better stop my bike, take some rest and then go back to home. Still i somehow kept pushing myself for few meters. Now i was tending to give up completely till another thought flashed in my mind( Never say i cannot for you can do anything and everything) and i tried convincing my mind that I can do it. Slowly, steadily i kept moving till the time i made it ( Ah! what an experience that was). How beautifully i realised the ancient wisdom of never giving up.

Now i took some rest and then proceeded towards my destination. I was enjoying the beautiful scenery as i was riding whereas people looked at me with awe. Finally after pedaling for another 4-5 kms i reached my destination ( a small eating point by the road side in the midst of beautiful pine trees ). I was sweating badly and asked for some lemonade. It was really refreshing .

Best part of my ride was my journey downhill. As i was coming down i saw an unpaved path and decided to use that although there was a slight hesitation in my mind. This path led to a rivulet and was very clean and green and on top of that golden sunshine falling on trees made the place look like heaven. I had a broad smile on my face. As i went ahead i got hold of the paved road near a village where some small children waved me. I now realised that i took some risk to explore the unexplored. There are so many things in life which we do not explore and the most common among them is simplicity. We meddle so much with computer, television and electronic gadgets and make our lives so complicated that we do not go close to the nature which has so much to offer.

By this time some cold breeze started blowing and its touch took away all the sweat from my body, every kiss of the breeze rejuvenated me and made me think about the mighty one and his unconditional love. I came back to my home a bit tired but thoroughly refreshed.

Hello all,

I am Saptarshi. I am working for Wipro Technologies for more than 3.5 yrs. I have chosen to cycle to work since 2 years.

The purpose of my writing this blog is :to articulate the benefits of cycling and how I made my choice.

–The distance is about 15kms one side and it takes me less than an hour to reach there.

This is how it all started..Read on!

My father is a Geologist and some times in my childhood I have accompanied him to field work to Leh(Jammu & Kashmir). We travelled in jeep. On the way I was always fascinated with the f tourists(generally foreigners) cycling up the hills in fancy geared bicycles. Since those cycles were not available in India at that point of time I even went up to the extent of thinking that I might buy a second hand cycle from one of the foreigners. They generally sell off the cycles in need of money or dispose it off before they go back their country. My first idea of having a geared bicycle comes way back from then.

It was one lucky day when I saw a cycle shop in Bangalore. Incidentally I had just finished reading “It’s not about the bike: My journey back to life” by Lance Armstrong which highly motivated me to get into cycling. I ll suggest everyone who reads my blog to read the book as well. I still remember this particular line “Even if I have 1% chance of survival I still have chance.”

Then how I chose to buy the bike is interesting. I checked out all the bikes with all their features short-listed a few bikes and then came back home. I actually wanted to understand if the cycle is a NEED for me than a WANT. I waited for a weeks time. If it was a want the idea would have faded away. But it grew stronger and stronger and I also was able to pin-point which bike to buy. It was a TREK 3700. Trivia: Trek is also the bike Lance Armstrong rides . It is a light aluminum frame bike which will help to lift it up on my shoulders on congested roads.

So here I am cycling my way to LIFE and the choice made was so strong that I still haven’t left cycling, even on those days when I had a choice to ride on a motorcycle to work.

Earlier the way to office was a bit more crowded with traffic more haywire. Generally bikes used to come into me(they rode on the wrong side of the road). I stood my ground without moving unless it was a very fast moving heavy vehicle was coming and I could sense that it wouldn’t stop for me. You needn’t shout or abuse your way but the idea is to create a resistance to something I believe is not right.

Now as chance would have it, I have moved to an office a bit nearer to my house(12kms one way). But the roads are smoother and the traffic is so much neater. The road sides are lined with pink blossomed trees. Keeps me closer to nature as well. So I take this moving to this new office as a “pat on my back” and move ahead the same direction in a more stronger way.

Now that I am already benefitting from cycling I would love someone else also to feel how it is:

1)My back used to hurt from everyday sitting in front of the computer at work. Now I feel the back has not only healed but got stronger.

2)After 6 months of my cyling I went to US for an official assignment. When I came back I had put around 6 kgs of weight and was feeling a lot less fitter than before. I continued cycling and and I lost all those extra kilos and the guilt as well.

3)Gyming before or after office is boring for me so I chose to exercise before and after office by cycling.

4)Unlike the understanding that cyling tires you out, I feel more fresh at office. One of my cycling buddies said “his productivity has increased since he has been cycling to work”

5)I do not get stuck in traffic jams. Generally there is always space enough to go ahead. In the worst situations I lift it up on my shoulders and move. You get so much more control in what you do as I only stop when I want to and on red lights.

6)You get more sensitive towards your fellow traffic mates.

7)I haven’t jumped signal even if the cars and bikes are honking behind me on a red light. I peacefully turn back and ask them “kya hai” with a hand gesture. Generally they have nothing to answer. Earlier I used to succumb to the pressure but everytime I did it I was not at peace. Now I just stand my ground. I even bring this strong value at office because there are times when you just have to “STAND YOUR GROUND”.

8)It is environment friendly and I would not feel guiltly of leaving a polluted World for my next generation.

9)I have chosen to donate the money I save by cycling to work. It is around Rs 1300.

Just like any choice you make this too will have downsides. Let me know put them down so that one can make a informed choice.

1) You inhale polluted air. To overcome this few people in my cycling club use air filter. They say”they feel less heavy in the chest”.

2) Being the lightest and least bulky people tend to ignore a cyclist. In the evenings one can opt to wear a flickering light on their helmets and keep the reflectors clean. You do not want to understand how important few small things are before it is too late.

3) Make your intention clear of taking a turn(left or right) by hand signals. Do not assume the other person would understand.

4) Wear a helmet. I read this in a mail from a fellow cycling mate. While riding on a off route trail this guy fell down. He had an bad fall. His head hit the road. The helmet broke into two.

Weighing all the options in the right balance I have all the reason to get CYCLED around

Saptarshi with his Trek 3700 | Photo Credit :Unknown

P.S. Much thanks and hugs to my close and dear friend Sapatarshi.

an integral part of my life. It just gives me a totally different perspective on things, people, places and issues” says Kunal. According to Ken, “Cycling is an amazing way to recreate and get out; doing something, especially in today’s environment where there are very few physical activities students can be involved in. It fits in perfectly as a natural way of building relationships with young people.”
The Doon Youth Center has been serving the city’s youth for the past nine years, offering free counselling and drop in facilities for youngsters on all weekdays. In the last few months, it has started a cycling club, open to all students from Dehradun schools, organizing short trips in and around the city. Students from St. Josephs Academy, Summer Valley School, St. Thomas and other schools have been regular part of the trips organized. “Going for these trips has been an amazing experience for me. I have been to places that I have never seen before,” says Shreya, a student of class VIII in SJA. Another class VIII student from SJA, Kevin remarks “I have always loved cycling and to do it as a group is great fun! All of us friends look forward to the trips on Sundays”
The trips are organized every alternate Sunday and the participants are only required to get their fully tuned bikes and water. Refreshments are provided by the DYC also leaving time for informal interactions and students from different schools mixing up getting to know each other. “After the rides, the students would just hang around at the centre, enjoy their cake and cold-drink, chatting with one another and playing table tennis. Sometimes we have to push them out,” smiles Manish, another volunteer at DYC. In the future, the Center also hopes to involve parents to get to cycle along with their kids. “It communicated so much to the child seeing dad coming along to cycle with him. Cycling serves as an excellent way to build and strengthen parent-child relationships,” explains Ken. With its commitment to serve the youth of the city, the DYC Cycling Club is another initiative that has been successfully attracting students to be a part of. Kunal, who is also the coordinator for the Cycling Club, exclaims “It is exciting to see the numbers increasing with each trip. We started with three and now for the last trip we had 35!” For any enquiries, one can call the DYC office at 0135-2710609 or drop-in to the centre between 4 and 8 in the evening.
